Description of the Spanish for Foreigners Program

The Spanish Program PUC belongs to the Faculty of Letters of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and s accredited by the Cervantes Institute, the only international accreditation focused exclusively on the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. 

Our program, the first Spanish as a second language (SSL) program in Chile, has a long history of teaching SSL. We have been teaching exchange students, professionals, diplomats, and the general public Spanish through private classes since 1990.

This program uns year-round and offers tailored Spanish courses according to the different levels and needs of our students. Our main objective is to teach Spanish through knowledge of the local culture by carrying out activities that favor immersion in Chile.

In addition to teaching the language courses of levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, and their respective sublevels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Teaching (CEFR), we are also an Exam Center for Diploma of Spanish as Foreign Language (DELE), and Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain (CCSE tests).

Our teachers

The Spanish Program has a team of highly educated teachers with in extensive experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Their role within the program, in addition to teaching, includes research, publication of ELE texts, creation of activities and class material, and the organization of Spanish as a Foreign Language / Second Language Seminars, all activities that our students are invited to participate in to be able to have a closer connection with university life in the PUC.

Our courses

The Spanish Program offers four types of courses:

a) Intensive courses: (between 20 and 60 hours) offered twice a year, during February and July and scheduled for foreign exchange students at the university*.

b) Semester courses: (between 40 and 60 hours) for all CEFR levels intended or foreign exchange students * at the university.

c) Courses for PUC Teachers: for all teachers who work or will work in the PUC and who are not native Spanish speakers.

d) Private individual and group courses for independent students, professionals, diplomats and the general public: provides personalized teaching focused on the work or academic needs of the learner.


To participate in a private individual course, students take a diagnostic test so we can  design a personalized class program that considers their level of Spanish, their interests and their stay in our country.

To participate in a private group course, it is necessary that the interested parties share the same level of language and that their schedules and academic interests are compatible.

Application for private courses

  • Confirm acceptance of the course, complete and sign the documents: a) Proposal for the Spanish course, and b) Terms and conditions for private courses. Both documents are sent by email.
  • Attend an interview with the person in charge of private Spanish courses to meet the specific needs of the student.
  • Take a Diagnostic Exam to locate the student at a language level. The interested party can take this test earlier if they prefer to receive the test by email.

Attendance Certification

At the end of a private individual or group course, each student will recievea final evaluation report and a certificate of attendance granted by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile for the number of hours completed.

Costs- Form of Payment

  • Individual private classes: US $ 45 (60 minutes)
  • Group private classes: US $ 35 (60 minutes) per student

There is no additional tuition or class materials fee.

After the course has begun the student receives a Payment Notification by email and by hand after which they must pay. Payment can be made in cash (Chilean pesos or dollars), check or through a bank deposit.
